What Should You Wear to Your Boudoir Session?

11 Questions you Need to Ask your Boudoir Photographer

What is a Boudoir session? How is it a Monumental Experience?

I'm a Los Angeles-based Boudoir photographer. As a sexual assault survivor, I have been on my own empowerment journey. And now, as a Boudoir photographer, I want to help other women embrace their bodies and sensuality.

This week I wanted to share some of my favorite beach boudoir posing ideas. I have an infinite number more ideas, so I am going to continue this next week and share some ideas for a rocky beach. Or if you are in Los Angeles like me, if you go to El Matador Beach you have the pleasure of having both sand, rocks, and caves to play around with! Outdoor Boudoir photography is one of my favorite kinds of boudoir but can be super intimidating. Like with most Boudoir, if you are thinking about doing it, go for it, and your experience is totally dependent on the photographer, so make sure you are working with someone who makes you feel comfortable! And lastly, remember that if you ever felt too uncomfortable and did not want to continue, all you have to do is tell your photographer that you are done!

When you stand still I recommend crossing one leg in front of the other and popping your hip that is in the back. This way you are accentuating your curves as much as possible. In a standing pose you can always put your hands in your hair.

You can take these from the front and back. I love a good standing pose looking out at the ocean.

So for these poses you can be on your side, lying face down or face up on the sand. Even though getting sand everywhere is not ideal, they look the best when you are directly on the sand.

So, let’s start with you lying on your side. I think they look the most natural if you are on your side and gazing out into the distance. You can prop your head up with your arm closest to the ground and the other hand can lay across your hip, across your stomach, play with your hair, essentially whatever feels the most comfortable to you.

The next pose to do lying down, is to be face down and scoot your knees towards your chest until your butt is elevated off the ground. Then you can look to the side at the camera or down to the ground.

Then flip right over and lie on your back. From here we are going to shimmy our butts back until our weight is resting solely on your head and ass. In this pose we are going to put our hands on our thighs, or behind our heads, or have one hand in your head with your elbow sticking up, or you can even throw your hands over your face if you don’t want it to be visible in the photograph.

There are so many different ways to sit that all look sexy and amazing.

The first is simply sitting with one leg crossed under the other and have the other leg propped up with your elbow resting on it. Then you can look at the camera directly or gaze into the distance.

Another pose on the ground is to sit on your knees. I always recommending forming a triangle with your feet behind you. Then you can put your hands in your hair and roam over your body with your hands. Essentially you are feeling yourself up. In this pose, you can alternate between looking at the camera, off into the distance and having your eyes closed. I like photographing this pose from the front, back, and sides, so I will also tell my clients to look over their shoulder at me, which always looks amazing!

The sitting poses look especially good if your feet are in the water or you are near the shoreline. With my most recent beach boudoir client, we had mossy rocks behind us that made the photographs stunning!

The beach is the perfect place for lingerie. Granted you better be prepared to get sand in your lingerie and to spend time cleaning it out. But being out in nature in lingerie is always super sexy and photographs really well. You can even get into the water wearing your lingerie and take pictures of the water dripping off your body. These photographs are always beautiful!

I love doing multiple outfits during my beach sessions, but a swimsuit or bikini is a classic. One, you probably feel more at ease being in your bikini at the beach and nowadays bikinis are super form fitting. I always recommend high-waisted bottoms because they fit your shape better and accentuate curves! Even a one-piece swimsuit can be super cute and sexy. There are tons with cut outs and sheer elements that add an element of spice.

Oversized clothing has a similar effect to a button down. But they are one sexy and they draw the eye in and add an element of intrigue. They make you want to know what is underneath and they help ease you into being naked other than your lingerie or underwear. If you are in a relationship, you can even use your partner’s clothing. Then if you are gifting your photographs to them, it will be even hotter and I bet those will be some of their favorite photographs.

Button down shirts have always been some of my favorites. They are super fun to play around with. Especially if you are doing an outdoor Boudoir photography session and want to get a little more comfortable in front of the camera before revealing your lingerie by itself, this is a perfect baby step. And they are so seductive. They are able to draw the eye in and make you wonder what is underneath. Additionally, if you are doing your boudoir session as a gift for your partner, they can feel included in the session even though they are not there.

In Boudoir Photography it is really fun to play with angles. They drastically shift the messaging of the pose. For example, if you are posing your client on their knees with their hands in their hair or on their legs. If you take the photo from a downward angles, the appearance is more submissive and playful, whereas if you take the photograph from an upward angles, their ass is accentuated more and the pose appears more dominant.

So whether or not you are doing beach Boudoir with a professional photographer, make sure you mess around with your angles and just have fun! I have so many more ideas to share with y’all so there will definitely be another blog post about some more beach Boudoir ideas. We haven’t even covered any poses in the water!
