Are Boudoir Photos Photoshopped? What I Edit (and What I Leave Alone)

Boudoir Photography Tips Blog Posts

One fear I hear all the time from women is that they will not be able to recognize themselves in their boudoir photographs. Everybody wants stunning images of themselves, but getting your photographs back and being unrecognizable is less than ideal. So, to answer the question: “Will I look like myself in my boudoir photographs, or will I be edited to high heavens?”

You will absolutely look like yourself. At ELI Boudoir, I will never edit you to the point you don’t recognize yourself. In fact, that goes against my entire philosophy when it comes to boudoir photography. All of your photographs will be professionally edited and retouched, however, I will not alter your body shape or your natural features.

There is a fundamental difference between creating artwork that celebrates who you are, your body and your story, versus artwork that removes your character.

This blog post will delve into my retouching process as a Los Angeles boudoir photographer and answer lingering questions.

Are Boudoir Photos Photoshopped?

Yes, your boudoir photographs will be professionally edited. No, I will not photoshop your body. I will adjust color, light, and tone, and remove temporary things like a breakout, but your shape, your face, your stretch marks, your scars, and your wrinkles stay exactly as they are.

If you are seeking a boudoir photographer who will modify your body, whether that is by slimming your arms, contouring your stomach or thighs, or modifying your face, I would encourage you to find another photographer. I will not do that. My goal as a boudoir photographer is to help women see their bodies in a different light. I want to help show you a different perspective and illuminate how your body is, and always has been, art. I simply cannot do that if the body I am showing you is not actually your body.

Feeling confident in an altered body is not the same as feeling confident in your own. That is not the body you see in the mirror when you criticize yourself.

The Difference Between Boudoir Photo Editing and Body Retouching

Editing a photograph refers to the process of adjusting a photograph’s overall appearance, modifying elements such as cropping a photograph, adjusting the contrast, exposure, and calibrating color. Retouching often refers to removing minor elements, such as pimples and minor blemishes. A step further is what most people mean when they worry about photoshopping: modifying or removing components of a photograph, such as your body. In boudoir retouching, that last step is where I draw the line.

If a photograph is taken properly, professionally editing it does not necessarily require heavily manipulating it. Professionally editing a photograph requires technical skill. At ELI Boudoir, this means adding my signature style and polishing the raw image.

What Do I Retouch in Your Boudoir Photos?

Temporary Blemishes and Small Distractions

I will happily remove pimples and temporary blemishes. I will also remove small distractions. For example, if you have a visible tampon string, I will edit it out of your photographs. I want you to be the sole focus of your photographs.

The Finishing Touches That Make an Image Feel Complete

When you get your photographs back, every image will have my signature finishing touches. I color grade each image, adjust the contrast and tone, and refine the crop. A few of your favorites may also be converted to black and white. Overall, your boudoir photographs will be bold, striking imagery full of moody sultriness.

Your boudoir photographs will truly make you feel like art (because you are).

What Won’t I Photoshop or Change About Your Body?

Your Body Shape and Size

Here are my hard boundaries: I will not slim your arms, flatten your stomach, or reshape any other part of your body. In my professional opinion, there is a major difference between removing a pimple and altering your body. A pimple is a temporary feature that is not part of your body and will be gone in a matter of days. Your body, however, is the whole reason you are doing a boudoir session. A boudoir session should make you feel incredibly powerful. I want your jaw to be on the floor when you see your photographs and finally reconsider everything that has made you feel insecure. I wholeheartedly believe that is impossible if I am modifying your body. Then the body that is giving you confidence is not yours. It is a stranger’s.

Your Natural Skin Texture, Stretch Marks, Scars, and Wrinkles

So, your skin shows signs of aging. It should. Or maybe you have stretch marks, or scars from your C-section or a surgery you had. None of those deserve to be hidden away. You have made it through every obstacle life has thrown in your way. Your body has weathered storms you weren’t sure it could. That alone deserves to be celebrated, not shrunk. Your existing features do not deserve to be erased or minimized. They deserve to be put on a pedestal.

How Do Boudoir Photos Look So Flattering Without Heavy Retouching?

Boudoir photographs look phenomenal without heavy retouching due to beautiful composition, fantastic posing, awareness of how to utilize lighting, and because you never needed heavy retouching in the first place.

Intentional Lighting Makes a Difference

Lighting creates the atmosphere and mood of a photograph. Dramatic lighting is mesmerizing and trains your eye exactly where to go. I love utilizing dramatic lighting to illuminate your curves and draw attention to your face. Softer lighting is fantastic to show a different side of your personality. It can be more sultry and create the perfect air of sexiness.

As a professional photographer, I choose what lighting matches the photograph in camera, not after the fact. It is not part of my post-production process but is something my eye is trained for.

Utilizing good lighting is not the same as manipulating your body, especially when the intention is not to light your body to be slimmer but simply to illuminate your beautiful body as it is.

Guided Posing, Angles, and Composition

You don’t need to know how to pose. I demonstrate every pose so you can simply mirror me, and I’ll guide the small things too: where your chin goes, how to shift your weight, what to do with your hands. Posing and angles change how light and shape fall across your body, but they are never about hiding or shrinking you. I don’t pose to minimize a body. I pose to show it off. Can I Request Specific Retouching on My Boudoir Photos?

It depends on what it is. My rule is simple: temporary marks, yes. Permanent features, no. So, things like a bruise, bra strap marks, stray hairs, or flyaways can be removed. Your body shape, stretch marks, scars, and wrinkles stay. Little distractions, such as an outlet in the background, will be removed either way.

What Happens If I Notice Something at My Reveal?

At your private reveal and ordering appointment, you will see edited proofs. If you notice something at your reveal, you can and should bring it up, and I will make a note of it. As long as you are not requesting a modification to your body, I will do my best to oblige.

At your reveal, you will select which photographs you want to keep. Only these photographs will undergo the final round of retouching. If you want to understand the entire post-session process, read what happens after your boudoir session.

Will My Finished Boudoir Photographs Still Look Like Me?

The goal is for your boudoir photographs to feel like you. They should not show a version of you that is edited to be unrecognizable. My goal is to create photographs that are artistic, undeniably you, and so beautiful you do a double take, and still know it’s you. A stunning photograph should not need to undergo heavy editing to be magnetic and jaw-dropping.

Boudoir Retouching FAQ

Do you edit out stretch marks?

No. Stretch marks are part of your body and your story. Like your scars and wrinkles, they stay exactly as they are.

Will you make me look thinner?

No. I will not slim your arms, flatten your stomach, or reshape any other part of your body. Your photographs will show your body as it is, lit and posed beautifully.

Will I see my photos before they are finalized?

Yes. You will see edited proofs at your private reveal and ordering appointment, about two weeks after your session. That is where you choose your favorites and let me know about anything you noticed.
