Birthday Photoshoot Ideas for Women: Why Every Woman Deserves to Celebrate Herself

Uncategorized Boudoir Blog Posts

Yes, every woman deserves a birthday photoshoot, and you don’t have to be a certain age, size, or stage of life to do one. A birthday photoshoot is a beautiful way to celebrate who you are right now, document the woman you’ve become, and to truly see yourself. Your session doesn’t have to follow any rules. It can be sexy, playful, elegant, dramatic, and most importantly represents you. And no, you don’t need to lose weight, fix your wrinkles, or wait until you feel more confident beforehand. Learn more about why birthday photography is a powerful act of self-love, find ideas for what to wear, and how to personalize your session, and lastly why aging is something worth celebrating. Most importantly, I’ll remind you why you don’t need to wait for a “better” version of yourself to be worthy of the photographs.

There is something about birthdays that makes us stop for a second.

Another year.

Another trip around the sun.

Another year of life, growth, change, laughter, hard things, beautiful things, and everything in between.

And while we are usually pretty good at celebrating everyone else, I think women could get a whole lot better at celebrating themselves.

So if you’ve been wondering, should I do a birthday photoshoot?

My answer is:

Absolutely.

And I don’t just mean little kids’ birthdays.

I am talking about grown-ass women.

Women turning 33.

Women turning 47.

Women turning 64.

Women turning 29, 52, 70, or 81.

Women at every age and every stage of life.

Because you are always worth celebrating.

What Is a Birthday Photoshoot for Women?

A birthday photoshoot is simply an intentional photography session centered around celebrating you and the season of life you’re currently in.

And it does not have to look like a kid’s traditional birthday party.

There don’t have to be tiaras.

There don’t have to be bouncy castles.

There don’t have to be ginormous balloons or a giant number representing your age.

Although, if that’s your thing, PLEASE DO IT. 😉

A birthday photoshoot can be elegant, playful, sexy, artistic, casual, emotional, or completely unique to you.

It should be about your birthday.

It can be the perfect excuse to stop for a minute and celebrate the woman you’ve become.

Because honestly?

I think we need more excuses to press pause.

Why Every Woman Deserves a Birthday Photoshoot

A birthday session isn’t just about having beautiful photographs of yourself.

It is about celebrating you.

Your journey.

Your inner beauty.

Your strength.

Your power.

The things you’ve survived.

The things you’ve accomplished.

The things you’ve learned.

The woman you were five years ago.

The woman you are today.

And maybe even the woman you are still becoming.

There is something incredibly powerful about taking the time to actually see yourself. And if you’re still wondering why women choose to do a boudoir session in the first place, here are some of the real reasons women book boudoir photoshoots.

Because so often, we are so busy living our lives that we don’t stop to look at the person living them.

We move from one thing to the next.

Work.

Kids.

School.

Appointments.

Laundry.

Dinner.

Bills.

Birthdays for everyone else.

And suddenly another year has passed.

Let’s be honest: unless you intentionally make time for yourself, life flies by.

So why not make your birthday the excuse?

Why not say:

This year, I am going to celebrate myself.

Not because you finally lost the weight.

Not because your skin looks perfect.

Not because you finally feel confident.

Not because you’ve somehow arrived at some magical version of yourself who is finally “worthy” of being photographed.

You are worthy right now.

You Don’t Have to Wait Until You Feel Better About Your Body

This is one of the biggest reasons I wish more women would book a birthday portrait session.

I hear it all the time.

“I’ll do it when I lose 10 pounds.”

“I’ve gained weight.”

“I don’t love my arms.”

“I have wrinkles.”

“I have scars.”

“I don’t feel like I used to.”

“I need to get in shape first.”

And I get it.

I really do.

We live in a world that has taught women to constantly evaluate themselves.

Too big.

Too old.

Too soft.

Too wrinkly.

Too much.

Not enough.

If that little voice in your head is telling you that you need to change your body before you get in front of the camera, I wrote an entire post about whether you really need to lose weight before a boudoir shoot.

Here’s the problem with waiting until you feel perfect:

You will probably always find something to wait for.

Your body will change.

Your face will change.

Your life will change.

That’s called being human.

And I don’t want you to miss the opportunity to celebrate yourself because you were waiting to become someone else.

There is no future version of you who is more deserving of being celebrated than the woman you are today.

You don’t have to earn the right to be photographed.

You don’t have to earn the right to take up space.

You don’t have to earn the right to feel beautiful.

You already belong in the shot.

Sometimes You Just Need to See Yourself Through Someone Else’s Eyes

This is one of my favorite things about photography.

Sometimes we have an incredibly distorted view of ourselves.

We see the wrinkle.

The scar.

The extra weight.

The thing we wish was different.

And then someone else looks at you and sees something completely different.

They see your strength.

They see your softness.

They see your confidence.

They see your laugh.

They see the way you move.

They see the woman who has lived a whole damn life.

And sometimes all it takes is seeing yourself through someone else’s eyes to realize:

Oh.

There I am.

That woman has been here all along.

Self-love is not vain. Self-love is essential.

And I think there is something really beautiful about creating photographs that remind you of that.

Birthday Photoshoot Ideas for Women

If you’re wondering what to actually do during a birthday photoshoot, the answer is: whatever feels like you.

Your session doesn’t have to follow someone else’s idea of what a birthday portrait session should look like.

You could create something soft and romantic.

Something bold and editorial.

Something playful and colorful.

Something sexy and intimate.

Something simple and timeless.

Or a combination of all of the above.

You could incorporate flowers, a birthday cake, champagne glasses, balloons, or other meaningful details.

Or you could leave all of that out.

Sometimes the most beautiful photographs are the simplest ones. You don’t need any accessories. You just need yourself and a beautiful location.

What Should You Wear for a Birthday Photoshoot?

Here’s another thing I want you to know:

There are no rules.

You don’t have to wear lingerie.

You don’t have to wear a dress.

You don’t have to wear anything that doesn’t feel like you.

You can wear a sports bra and panty set.

You could wear a three-piece lingerie set.

You could wear jeans and a beautiful blouse.

You could wear jeans and a bralette.

You could wear a silk slip skirt.

You could wear a suit.

You could wear something casual.

The options are truly endless.

The only requirement?

Your outfits need to make you feel confident and beautiful.

And notice I didn’t say look confident.

I said feel confident.

Because those are two very different things.

Maybe your version of sexy is lingerie.

Maybe it is a pair of jeans and a white tank top.

Maybe it’s bare feet and a giant sweater.

Maybe it’s a gorgeous dress you’ve been saving in the back of your closet because you haven’t had anywhere to wear it.

Wear the damn dress.

This is your birthday.

You get to make the rules.

And if you’re staring at your closet thinking, Okay, but what the hell do I actually wear? I’ve got you. Here are some of my favorite boudoir outfit ideas to help you figure out what feels like you.

Your Birthday Photoshoot Doesn’t Have to Be Sexy

I think sometimes women hear “birthday photoshoot” and immediately think boudoir.

And it absolutely can be.

But it doesn’t have to be.

Your birthday photoshoot can be sexy.

It can be playful.

It can be elegant.

It can be soft.

It can be moody.

It can be funny.

It can be completely unapologetic.

It can be all of those things in one session.

Maybe you want photographs that feel like art.

Maybe you want photographs that feel like you.

Maybe you want to look at them ten years from now and remember exactly who you were at 38.

That is my goal.

Imagine Having These Photographs Ten Years From Now

This is the part I really want you to think about.

Imagine you’re 10 years older.

You open an album.

And there you are.

Exactly as you were.

Not younger.

Not “perfect.”

You.

You see the body you spent so much time criticizing.

The face you thought looked too tired.

The wrinkles you wanted to hide.

The scar you wished wasn’t there.

And suddenly…

You would give anything to have that woman back.

Not because she was more beautiful.

But because she was you.

Because you realize how quickly time moved.

Because you realize she was beautiful the entire time.

Because you realize you wish she had been a little kinder to herself.

So maybe we can skip that part.

Maybe we can choose to be kind to ourselves now.

Maybe we can choose to celebrate the body we have now.

Maybe we can choose to document this chapter instead of waiting for the next one.

Getting Older Is Worth Celebrating

Getting older is a privilege.

Seriously.

There are people who would give anything for another year.

Another birthday.

Another opportunity to laugh with their friends.

Another year with their children.

Another year to fall in love.

Another year to figure themselves out.

Another year to become more fully themselves.

So celebrate it.

Celebrate 33.

Celebrate 47.

Celebrate 64.

Celebrate 70.

Celebrate the messy years and the beautiful years.

Celebrate the year you started over.

Celebrate the year you finally figured something out.

Celebrate the year you survived something hard.

Celebrate the year you became a little more yourself.

And if you don’t have a birthday coming up?

Who cares.

Pick a day.

Make up a reason.

You don’t actually need permission.

You Deserve to Be in the Frame

I say this all the time in family photography:

You deserve to be in the frame.

And I mean that for women, too.

You are not just the person taking the photos.

You are not just the person behind the camera at your child’s birthday party.

You are not just the person documenting everyone else’s milestones.

You are part of the story.

Your story matters.

Your body matters.

Your life matters.

And the woman you are today deserves to be remembered.

So yes.

Do the birthday photoshoot.

Book the photographer.

Wear the outfit.

Buy the flowers.

Put on the lipstick.

Blast your favorite music.

Laugh.

Move.

Dance.

Take up space.

Let yourself be seen.

And for the love of everything, stop waiting until you think you are worthy of the photographs.

You already are.

You always have been.

And someday, you may look back at these photographs and realize something:

You weren’t documenting the woman you wanted to become.

You were celebrating the woman you already were.

And she was pretty damn incredible.

Because she is.
