I'm a Los Angeles-based Boudoir photographer. As a sexual assault survivor, I have been on my own empowerment journey. And now, as a Boudoir photographer, I want to help other women embrace their bodies and sensuality.
If you’re pregnant and considering a maternity boudoir session, you’re probably wondering: when is the best time to schedule it? Timing is critical. The goal is to capture the perfect blend of comfort and that radiant baby glow. I would say the sweet spot for maternity Boudoir is between 28 and 36 weeks of pregnancy. During this timeframe, your belly is beautifully rounded and you are still fairly comfortable.
Between 28 to 36 weeks pregnant, your baby belly has grown substantially, so it will be beautifully captured in photographs but it is not creating an immense overall discomfort or the fatigue that comes in the final weeks of pregnancy. Lastly, your mobility is still largely intact, so there is more versatility with poses and possible positions.
Additionally, typically the swelling that comes at the end of pregnancy has not begun yet so you will feel more confident and comfortable in front of the camera. Typically, your energy levels dip around the final few weeks, so having your maternity Boudoir session before then, ensures you are feeling your best.
Pregnancy is not uniform; every woman’s bodies change differently. Your maternity boudoir session should be timed accordingly. Some women deal with morning sickness or extreme fatigue well into the second and third trimester. Whereas, other women never get morning sickness or never feel utterly exhausted. So, the goal should be scheduling your session for when you think you will feel the most confident and comfortable.
If you are having a high-risk pregnancy (could be for a number of reasons such as age), I would recommend scheduling your session earlier, in case your OBGYN puts you on bed rest or if any other complications arise.
For outdoor Maternity sessions, you will also want to consider the weather and lighting. For an outdoor Maternity session, i would recommend the milder months, so fall and spring, so you do not have to deal with extreme heat or frigid cold. Obviously, this is dependent on location, and being in Los Angeles we are spoiled.
While the majority of women wait until they reach 28-weeks pregnant to have their maternity boudoir sessions, some women choose do their session earlier on in their pregnancy. This could be due to speculation that they will not feel as confident or vivacious later on, or perhaps they want to capture a smaller, subtler baby bump. The main circumstance, that I would recommend considering an earlier session, is if you are worried about health concerns, such as pre-eclampsia, that might arise later on in your pregnancy.
The challenge with Maternity Boudoir before the third trimester, is that your baby belly might not be as pronounced and therefore we will not be able to capture the full beauty of your pregnancy curves.
Some mothers-to-be wait until after 36-weeks to have their Maternity Boudoir session. Sometimes this is solely due to scheduling conflicts or it can be due to desires to capture the final moments of their pregnancy. Waiting comes with risks. Often by the time you hit 37 or 38 weeks, you feel more uncomfortable, exhausted, and are less flexible which can restrict the poses we can do.
Additionally, your due date is an estimate, not a definite. Your baby could arrive early, so scheduling too close to your due date might jeopardize your maternity boudoir session.
The only way to know if you are ready for your session is to listen to your body. Obviously, you are booking it well in advance, but essentially, you’ve got to determine if you want maternity boudoir photographs and how big you want your bump to be.
If you’re expecting twins, triplets, or dealing with a high-risk pregnancy, I would recommend scheduling your session earlier on. Multiple pregnancies often have earlier delivery dates and your belly begins to show earlier on. So, I would recommend scheduling a Maternity Boudoir session sooner than the 28 weeks. Similarly, if your doctor told you to take it easy due to health concerns, scheduling your maternity boudoir session earlier on, when you are still mobile and comfortable will ensure you don’t miss out. And you will look more radiant in your Maternity Boudoir photographs.
Experienced mothers might already have a gauge of what timeframe is optimal for their Maternity Boudoir session, whereas first-time mothers will be more cautious. The timing can vary depending on the pregnancy, and from woman to woman.
Beyond pregnancy comfort, there are other factors to consider when scheduling your maternity Boudoir session:
Between doctor’s appointments, baby showers, and preparing for your baby, you schedule will be jam packed. Make sure you get your maternity Boudoir session scheduled, so you don’t run out of time for it!
The majority of photographers’ schedules, like myself, fill up months in advance, so I would recommend organizing your session months in advance to avoid any scheduling conflicts.
Maternity Boudoir sessions can take place indoors and outdoors. If you decide to do an outdoor session, make sure you consider the weather, light, and season. In Los Angeles, we are lucky, because even our cold weather is more moderate. I would still recommend Spring and Fall for outdoor Boudoir sessions; this is when the weather is calmer. Indoor sessions provide more flexibility in terms of weather, although the backdrop varies less and the studio will set the tone.
Preparing for your Boudoir session is critical. Make sure you are hydrating and getting a full night of sleep the day before. Additionally, choose outfits that make you feel beautiful. Leave the rest up to your photographer, as a Boudoir photographer, my main goal is making sure you walk away feeling confident, empowered, comfortable, and sexy.
Maternity Boudoir is an amazing, intimate way to capture your pregnancy and remember this time. The best time to do a Maternity Boudoir session is typically between 28- and 36-weeks mark of your pregnancy. During this period, your pregnancy belly is showing and is beautifully rounded, but you are still fairly comfortable and energized. The timing varies dependent on person, no two pregnancies are the same. Regardless of if your session is earlier or later on in your pregnancy, the goal is unwavering, to make you feel confident and empowered during this special time, and last but not least creating a unique and special memento of your pregnancy.
The best time to do a maternity boudoir session is typically between 28 and 36 weeks of pregnancy. During this window, your belly is beautifully rounded, and you’re likely still feeling comfortable and energized. However, timing can vary based on personal comfort, pregnancy circumstances, and even your photographer’s availability. Whether you choose to do your session earlier, later, or within the standard range, the goal is to feel confident and empowered while celebrating this special time in your life.

You can, but is more physically challenging due to fatigue and the unpredictability of late-stage pregnancy.
There are so many options, but the most important piece is that it makes you feel comfortable and beautiful. I always recommend bringing a few extra pieces, so if something is not photographing well or you do not feel as confident in it, you can change. Good starting points are lingerie, flowing dresses, jeans with no shirt or with a cute bra.
Look for a Boudoir photographer whose style resonates with you. I recommend reading through their reviews, portfolios, and scheduling a call with them. On the call describe your dream session, and make sure it is a good fit. My advice is to make sure you feel heard and comfortable around your Boudoir photographer.
Absolutely! Make sure you discuss this with your photographer prior to the session, but the majority of Maternity Boudoir photographers are happy to include your partner in the session.
I recommend booking your session a few months in advance to ensure the Maternity Boudoir photographer you want is available. Most photographers, like me, book out so this way you can guarantee your session will be during the pregnancy sweet spot.
