40th Birthday Ideas in Los Angeles: 11 Ways to Celebrate Without a Big Party

Women Empowerment Blog

I hear some version of this in my studio more than you’d think:

“I’m turning 40. I don’t want a big party. But I also don’t want it to feel like a regular Tuesday.”

I get it. Turning 40 is a pretty good excuse to do something spectacular. But spectacular doesn’t have to mean renting a venue, wrangling fifty people’s schedules, or spending your own birthday making sure everyone else has a drink in their hand.

Some women love a big celebration, and if that’s you, throw the party! This list is for the woman who would rather spend the day doing something she genuinely wants to do. Alone, with her partner, or with the three people she’d call at 2 am.

Luckily, Los Angeles makes that easy. Here are 11 ways to celebrate your 40th that feel personal, a little indulgent, and completely yours.

11 Unique 40th Birthday Experiences in Los Angeles

1. Take a Creative Workshop and Make Something That’s Yours

There’s something special about leaving your birthday with a thing you made with your own hands. Pottery, floral arranging, painting and jewelry making are all wonderful. But for a 40th, I love perfume making, because you walk out with a scent that smells like this exact chapter of your life.

The Institute for Art and Olfaction on Chung King Road in Chinatown offers hands-on perfume workshops where you can learn about fragrance and create a scent of your own. Their introductory blending classes are a wonderful option, whether you’re going alone or with a friend. Check their calendar for upcoming dates and reserve ahead.

2. Book a Beautiful Los Angeles Staycation

You don’t need a plane ticket to wake up somewhere that isn’t your house. Somewhere nobody is going to ask you where the snacks are.

Check in early. Order room service. Take a bath in a tub you didn’t have to clean. Get dressed up for dinner, or don’t, and sleep until you wake up on your own.

A few options at different budgets:

  • The Culver Hotel in Culver City: a historic flatiron building in the middle of a very walkable downtown. Cozy, classic, midrange.
  • Hotel Figueroa in Downtown LA: a beautifully restored historic hotel with a pool, restaurants, and an especially wonderful backstory. It originally opened in 1926 as a hotel for women, offering female travelers a place of independence and freedom. A pretty fitting spot to celebrate your own milestone, if you ask me.
  • Hotel Erwin in Venice: steps from the boardwalk, with a rooftop made for sunset. Midrange to upper.
  • Shutters on the Beach in Santa Monica: the splurge, and one of the only LA hotels right on the sand.

When you book, mention it’s your birthday. You’d be surprised how often that gets you a little something extra.

3. Spend the Day by the Ocean

A beach day is nice. A birthday beach day deserves a little more intention.

Here’s an easy half day in Malibu:

  1. Late morning: Walk the bluff trails at Point Dume. The views stretch down the coastline, and it’s a good spot for seeing dolphins and seals.
  2. Lunch: Head to Malibu Farm on the Malibu Pier. Lunch is walk-in only, so try to beat the noon rush.
  3. Afternoon: Wander to the end of the pier, then find a spot on the sand and stay put until golden hour.

Bring a sweater. The coast cools off quickly once the sun starts dropping.

This one is perfect solo or with one person you love. Just give yourself extra time on PCH, because Malibu traffic has opinions.

4. Dress Up for a Show You’ve Always Wanted to See

When was the last time you got dressed up just to sit in a dark room and be completely swept away?

Pick the show that genuinely excites you, not the one you think a 40th birthday should look like. A few places to start:

  • The LA Phil at Walt Disney Concert Hall downtown
  • A touring Broadway musical at the Hollywood Pantages
  • A new play at the Geffen Playhouse in Westwood
  • Comedy and music at Largo at the Coronet, which is small enough that every seat feels close
  • A summer concert under the stars at the Hollywood Bowl

Planning tip: big shows sell out months ahead, so buy tickets as soon as you know your date. Then book an early dinner nearby so you aren’t sprinting from the parking garage in heels.

5. Plan an Art-Filled Afternoon

If it’s been a while since you’ve seen LACMA, now is a great time to go back. The new David Geffen Galleries opened this spring and became the new home for the museum’s permanent collection, all on one level, in a building that stretches right over Wilshire.

You don’t have to see everything. Wander until something stops you, then stay there as long as you want. That’s the whole point of a birthday.

Good to know: LA County residents get in free on weekday afternoons after 3 pm with ID, and the museum is closed on Wednesdays. Urban Light is free to visit anytime.

Afterward, walk over to the La Brea Tar Pits grounds next door, or treat yourself to a late lunch and a slice of cake somewhere on La Brea Avenue you’ve been meaning to try.

6. Try a Tasting Experience With a Few Favorite People

A birthday dinner is lovely. But this is about making the food the experience, not just the backdrop.

  • Afternoon tea at The Peninsula Beverly Hills. Tea is served in The Living Room, with seatings at 11 am and 1:30 pm, plus a 4 pm seating Friday through Sunday. You can add bottomless champagne. A splurge, and it feels like one.
  • Garden Tea at the Getty Villa. Afternoon tea inspired by the herbs and gardens of the Villa, served in the Founder’s Room. Your tea reservation also covers your museum entry reservation. Check the current schedule and book ahead.
  • A chef-led cooking class. Sites like Cozymeal list small-group classes around LA, from pasta to sushi, mostly in the $75 to $175 per person range. Some chefs will even come to your home.

All three work well for two to six people, which is exactly the point. Social, special, and you don’t have to host.

7. Do Something a Little Outside Your Comfort Zone

This doesn’t have to be a grand transformation. Sometimes a milestone birthday is just a really good excuse to finally try the thing.

  • Gentle: A guided trail ride at Sunset Ranch Hollywood, a family-owned ranch at the top of Beachwood Drive since 1929. The one-hour ride is beginner friendly and comes with Hollywood Sign views. Their evening rides go up Mount Hollywood as the city lights come on. Check their rider requirements before booking.
  • Medium: A drop-in class at Millennium Dance Complex in Studio City. Look for a beginner level class, go in the back row, and let yourself be terrible at it for an hour. It’s so fun.
  • Most active: A surf lesson. Learn to Surf LA teaches year-round in Santa Monica, Venice and Manhattan Beach, and says most of its students stand up after just one class.

Whichever you pick, you’ll leave with a great story. Possibly a few bruises. Worth it.

8. Plan an Intentional Wellness Experience

There’s a difference between the self-care you squeeze in to keep things running and something you choose on purpose because your birthday deserves it. This is the second kind. And to be clear, you aren’t fixing anything. You’re slowing down.

A sound bath is a nice place to start. You lie down, close your eyes, and let layered tones from singing bowls and gongs wash over you.

  • The Autry Museum in Griffith Park has hosted Sunday morning sound baths in its theater this year, and you can carry that calm right into the galleries afterward.
  • The Peace Awareness Labyrinth and Gardens in West Adams is a historic villa with an outdoor labyrinth built for slow, meditative walking, and it hosts sound baths from time to time.

These are scheduled events, not daily offerings, so check each calendar and reserve ahead.

9. Make It a Girls’ Day With Your Closest Friends

Not a party. A day. With two to five women you genuinely love being around.

The trick is choosing one great thing instead of cramming in brunch, shopping, dinner, drinks and a nightcap. My pick for a small group? A private sunset sail out of Marina del Rey.

Plenty of boats in the marina take six passengers or fewer, so it’s just you, your people, a captain, and the Pacific turning gold. Bring snacks and something bubbly (ask your captain what’s allowed on board), and plan to get a little windblown. Nobody has to host, and nobody has to pick a restaurant everyone agrees on.

The Marina del Rey Tourism Board keeps a list of boat rentals and yacht charters you can filter by sunset tours and group size. Before you book, they recommend confirming the boat is Coast Guard certified for commercial charters and the operator is licensed with LA County.

A few things that keep planning easy: pick the date first, then the activity. Let one person book and have everyone pay them back. And choose one location, so nobody spends half your birthday on the 10.

10. Celebrate With a Beautiful View of Los Angeles

Sometimes the best birthday gift is just standing somewhere high and remembering how big the world is.

Griffith Observatory is the classic, and it’s completely free. Admission to the building, the grounds and the public telescopes costs nothing, and on clear evenings you can look through a telescope at the moon or a planet. It’s open late Tuesday through Sunday and closed on Mondays. Parking at the top is paid, or you can often park for free near the Greek Theatre and walk up the hill. Just check the concert schedule first, since parking restrictions change on event nights.

If you want an ocean sunset instead, the Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook in Culver City (practically my neighborhood) faces west toward the Pacific. It’s open from 8 am until sunset. Drive up and park for a few dollars, or climb the 282 stairs if you’d like to earn your view.

One request: put your phone away for the actual sunset. Just watch it.

11. Give Yourself an Experience You’ve Been Putting Off

Almost every woman I know has a someday list. The trip. The private lesson. The beautiful piece of jewelry she keeps admiring and never buys. The class she’s been bookmarking for three years.

Turning 40 is a pretty great reason to take one thing off that list and actually do it.

For some women, that someday thing is professional portraits. Usually because they realized they’re always the one behind the camera, and there are almost no photos of them from the last ten years. If that sounds familiar, I put together a whole list of birthday photoshoot ideas for women to help you make a session feel like part of the celebration.

But it doesn’t have to be photos. Pick the thing you keep putting off, and book it. Future you will be so glad you did.

How to Plan a 40th Birthday in Los Angeles Without the Stress

Decide Who You Actually Want There

Not who you feel obligated to invite. Solo, with your partner, or with a few close friends can all be wonderful. That is a great starting point and from there, just choose activities you love.

Choose One Main Experience

Give the day one memorable centerpiece instead of five half-enjoyed plans. One great thing, with room around it to linger, beats a packed schedule every time.

Set a Budget That Feels Comfortable

A Griffith sunset is free. A perfume workshop or a surf lesson is a nice midrange treat. A night at Shutters is a splurge. None of these is a better birthday than the others. The best one is the one you’re excited about.

Book Early and Leave Room to Enjoy Yourself

Reserve popular things like afternoon tea, workshops and shows a few weeks out, and even earlier for weekend dates. Plan for real LA travel times, because 12 miles can easily take an hour. If you’ll be drinking, book a ride. And leave some unscheduled time. Birthdays are better when you aren’t watching the clock.
