What Should You Wear to Your Boudoir Session?

11 Questions you Need to Ask your Boudoir Photographer

What is a Boudoir session? How is it a Monumental Experience?

I'm a Los Angeles-based Boudoir photographer. As a sexual assault survivor, I have been on my own empowerment journey. And now, as a Boudoir photographer, I want to help other women embrace their bodies and sensuality.

Most new mothers will tell you that they are not confident in their bodies, or that they do not think their partners are as attracted to them compared to prior to their pregnancy. Beauty standards, surrounding pregnant and postpartum women, are outrageous. There is no world in which your body should rebound immediately, that is just unrealistic. The fact that your body changes to accommodate another human life is beautiful. These necessary, temporary changes should be celebrated rather than frowned upon. A Boudoir session is a perfect reason to celebrate your body and realize just how beautiful it is, right now.

I am not a mother, so I will not pretend to understand that feeling, but I firmly believe that all women, including mothers, deserve to feel confident and empowered. Motherhood is an emotional and practical maze; often new mothers forget to prioritize self-care. In fact, all mothers rarely remember they have needs and can cater to them. In my opinion, you cannot effectively take care of someone else, unless you are doing the same for yourself. If you prioritize yourself, doing something for you and you alone, your superhero card will not be taken away. Lastly, when you feel good, you move better and walk around with a newfound confidence. So, work with me to get that pep back in your step.

This reason frequently gets swept under the rug. If you talk poorly about yourself and your body, your children watch your behavior and internalize it. If you do not have a positive relationship with your body and are always hypercritical of it, your children will grow up being the same way. Even if you do not think they notice, they do, kids are insanely observant. This is not to say that you cannot have insecurities or voice them, but it is important to learn to appreciate your body at every stage.

The purpose of Boudoir photography is to help you fall in-love with your body as it is. You only have one body and it is going to continuously change shape throughout your entire life. Sometimes, you have more or less control over that. Regardless of if you are an arbitrary number of pounds heavier than you want to be or at your ideal weight, your body is still supporting you and carrying you through everyday life. Rather than criticizing your body for its changes, you should appreciate it. But societally, we are taught all weight gain is bad, which is simply false.

On a biological level, the human anatomical system is insanely complicated. The fact that day after day our bodies sustain life, and maintain all biologically necessary functions, is miraculous. Every last person on Earth can agree that sometimes life is overwhelming and simply too busy to maintain a healthy exercise regimen. Take this opportunity, to embrace the journey. Say thank you to your body for continuing to carry you though each trial and tribulation.

One of the beauties of a Boudoir session is that the photographs are permanent. This is why I am such a fan of wall art and albums. A physical piece of art, serves as a constant reminder that your body is magical and beautiful. Personally, this is why I value printed artwork over digital art. While digital art is convenient and easy to share, it is temporary and easily forgotten. Whereas, an album that is a mantlepiece or hangs out in your bedroom, is easy to pick up and look at. It is effectively, able to transport you back to that moment and remind you that you are a badass.

So, this is my ode to all women out there who are mothers, to invest in yourself and your confidence and book the damn Boudoir session.
