Shopping for the perfect sexy plus size lingerie should not feel stressful or like you have to compromise. After photographing tons of body-positive boudoir photoshoots in Los Angeles, one fact has become apparent: the lingerie that photographs the best is lingerie that feels good on your body, which means it must be comfortable. The ongoing lingerie trends are irrelevant, what matters is what inspires confidence. This plus size lingerie guide will go over the major styles of lingerie: plus size corsets, bodysuits, bra and panty sets, bustiers, and everything in between. Unfortunately, the majority of lingerie brands are not size inclusive and only offer up to a size 16, which by the way is the average woman’s clothing size. 

This plus size lingerie guide will help you navigate what lingerie looks stunning on your body and where to shop.

What Actually Matters in Plus Size Boudoir Lingerie

One of my biggest frustrations about plus size lingerie and clothing in general is the need to conceal your body, which is ridiculous. Your body is beautiful and deserves to be celebrated. 

So, here is what I, an inclusive boudoir photographer, think is important when it comes to your sexy plus size lingerie for boudoir photography sessions: 

• Stays in place while you move through various poses
• It should not not pinch your skin
• Plus size lingerie should stretch and offer support and flexibility 
• It should not feel overly restrictive
  

You should choose your lingerie pieces based on what fits and feels good rather than what has more coverage. Especially during your photoshoot, coverage does not translate to stunning photos. Truthfully, comfort does. If you are able to move around and pose comfortably, you will relax more. 

Look out for these things in plus size lingerie:

Here are a couple things that could be useful to look out for: 

• Wide bands 
• Multiple hook closures (stronger)
• Stretchy fabrics 

A word from the wise – do not try to squeeze into a smaller size. It will actually create more problems. Rather than the lingerie complimenting your body, it will distract and force your skin to bulge around it. The best lingerie allows your body to move freely around it. This is what to look for, for your boudoir photoshoot.

Types of Lingerie That Work Well for Plus Size Boudoir

Bra and Panty Sets

Bra and panty sets look stunning on all bodies and can be more comfortable due to the built in flexibility. Depending on what parts of your body you want to accentuate, you can mix around with different bra cups and panty shapes. 

Sexy plus size lingerie is so much more than underwear – it is a way of personal expression. It communicates comfort, confidence, and creativity. It can be practical, romantic, bold, edgy, or quietly empowering depending on the style of lingerie and how you wear it. There are an infinite number of lingerie styles, allowing you to express different aspects of your personality. Throughout this plus size lingerie guide, I will dive into the most common lingerie styles for daily wear, special occasions and future boudoir photoshoots. The plus size lingerie guide will be organized by garment type and why they belong in your wardrobe. 

Traditional Bra and Panty Sets

he bra and panty set is the classic lingerie look. These sets are the backbone of any lingerie collection and can range from simple cotton basics to intricate lace designs. Some sets are designed for comfort and everyday wear, while others are reserved for moments when you want to feel especially confident or sensual. A well-designed bra should support your body without causing discomfort, fit and quality make all the difference.

Panties complete the look and influence how your body appears under clothing. Different cuts and designs can emphasize curves, smooth lines, or create a more angular shape. Together, a bra and panty set can shape your figure.

The fabric your lingerie is made out of plays a massive role in both comfort, appearance, and functionality. Cotton is extremely breathable and soft, ideal for everyday usage. Microfiber is smooth against your skin and is perfect underneath tightly fitting clothing. Lace and mesh are stunning materials that are popular for boudoir photoshoots. 

I would recommend visiting a lingerie or bra fitting store to try on different styles and figure out what compliments your body. In Los Angeles, you could visit a lingerie specialty store such as the Lace Lounge or Jenette Bras.  Subtle changes to band size, cup shape, elasticity and structure can drastically alter how a bra fits your body. 

Full Coverage Bras

Full coverage bras offer the maximum support and coverage. These typically include underwires which help distribute weight evenly and minimize shoulder strain. This bra style is especially favored by women with fuller busts who need support. 

Demi Bras

Demi bras cover the lower portion of your breast while highlighting your cleavage. A Demi bra pairs beautifully with lower necklines and have lace or decorative edges making them especially popular for boudoir photography shoots.

Balconette Bras

A balconette bra is designed to lift your boobs up from underneath. Typically, they have wider-set straps and have an underwire. Unlike other types of bras, they do not have heavy padding. This style is particularly flattering for women with broader shoulders. Marilyn Monroe led the charge of making this style of lingerie popular. This might be my favorite bra style on this plus size lingerie guide, however if you have a bigger bust, balconette bras might not have enough built in support.

Plunge Bras

Plunge bras are designed with a deep V-shaped neckline, making them perfect for low-cut clothing. Typically, they do not have padding like push-up bras, but by design the shape creates cleavage. 

Triangle Bras

Triangle bras typically have minimal structure. They have simple triangular cops and are often wireless. Their design usually makes them lightweight and comfortable.

Push-Up Bras

Push-up bras use padding to lift at the base of the bra cup and center the bust:

• Level 1: Light shaping with angular padding
  
• Level 2: Adds one cup size
  
• Level 3: Adds two cup sizes
  

Bodysuits & Teddies

Bodysuits and teddies are one-piece lingerie garments that cover your torso and crotch. Teddies tend to feature more lace detailing, while bodysuits are more basic. These pieces can be worn privately, styled for boudoir sessions, or even paired with everyday clothing. The terminology is frequently interchanged, so choose your piece based on style and fit rather than name. These lingerie pieces are extremely popular. Honestly, this plus size lingerie guide would be incomplete without them.

Bodysuits visually elongate your torso and highlight your natural shape. They range in style from thong-cut bodysuits, plunge necklines, high neck designs, strapless options, to long sleeves, and more. Fit is really important. If they are too tight they can restrict movement, but on the contrary if they are too loose they will obscure your figure. These are always a great choice if you are after the next sexy plus size lingerie piece fro your wardrobe. For boudoir photography sessions, bodysuits are a standout choice and one of my personal favorites.

Camisoles and Crop Tops

Camisoles are lightweight, soft tops that are traditionally made from satin or silk. They are great for personal use and are extremely comfortable. In boudoir photoshoots, they tend to create a softer, more relaxed look. They can work best when paired with more revealing panties. 

Corsets and Bustiers

Plus Size corsets and bustiers are structured pieces that offer support and shape. A plus size corset focuses on cinching the waist, while a bustier function more like extended bras that frame the torso. Made from satin, lace, brocade, or twill with boning for structure, a plus size corset and bustier create dramatic, hourglass silhouettes and are incredibly empowering when properly fitted. 

Garter Belts and Hosiery

Garter belts wrap around your waist or hips and attach to thigh-high stockings in place and add a timeless, sensual appeal. They pair well with nearly any lingerie style and can increase the sex appeal of any sexy plus size lingerie set.

Bralettes 

Bralettes are wire-free and prioritize comfort. Compared to traditional bras, they do not have any lift. They are a popular choice for women who are not fans of the discomfort created from underwires. Bralettes photograph beautifully and be a great addition in your closet for lazy days. 

Robes and Kimonos

Robes are typically worn as a cover up and can range from silk to sheer materials. These are not recommended for boudoir photoshoots, because they conceal your body’s shape rather than highlighting your figure. 

Slip Dresses

Slip dresses originated as undergarments, but are now popularly worn on their own. Typically slip dresses are made out of satin or silk. They can range in style from simple to ornate designs.

Here are some important questions to ask about the plus size lingerie you want to bring to your boudoir photoshoot:

• Can I comfortably move around in this piece? Does this stay in place when I move?
• Do I feel supported, not suffocated?

Lingerie goes beyond aesthetics and the material each lingerie piece is crafted with. At its core, lingerie is about your relationship to yourself and your body. As a boudoir photographer I have worked with so many different women, all with different body shapes and sizes and one thing that has become apparent to me, is we are all on our own journeys at different levels of comfortabilities with our bodies. Some of us are further along and have been forced to grow more comfortable with our “imperfections” due to societal norms. Other women are just arriving at the doorstep of acceptance and self-love.

A boudoir photoshoot is a great step in the process. But lingerie and finding plus size lingerie brands that craft lingerie that feels sexy and lets you appreciate the parts of your body that you love can be challenging. It shouldn’t be. However, in a society where loving your body is not the norm and we are taught to conceal and to hide our bodies, it is.
