What Should You Wear to Your Boudoir Session?
11 Questions you Need to Ask your Boudoir Photographer
What is a Boudoir session? How is it a Monumental Experience?
I'm a Los Angeles-based Boudoir photographer. As a sexual assault survivor, I have been on my own empowerment journey. And now, as a Boudoir photographer, I want to help other women embrace their bodies and sensuality.
A real world lingerie guide for Los Angeles boudoir sessions, or simply for women shopping for high-quality lingerie needing a place to start. So let’s dive into it – not all lingerie sets are made equal – there are various styles, materials, and purposes. There are so many different lingerie styles, you can choose whether or not you are after a sexy lingerie set or simply an everyday simple lingerie set. This lingerie guide will cover all of the different styles and brands to turn to for every last lingerie need you have.
I have put together the most comprehensive list I could – it is organized by price point. I know that lingerie can be inaccessible due to how expensive it can be, so I wanted to create a guide that helps you shop for what you can afford. This way you can treat yourself to that special piece of lingerie that will feel like your secret weapon.
If you are searching for lingerie for your boudoir photoshoot, be prepared to be inundated with options. This lingerie guide will periodically be updated, so if you have lingerie brands that deserve to be added let me know.
I got bored of waiting around for the perfect lingerie guide, so I created one. As a boudoir photographer I have the most insider knowledge.

Lingerie is so much more than simply underwear. It is a genre of clothing that goes deeper than what is on the surface and ranges from practicality to artistic expression of your identity. There is a ton of variety in materials, textures, and styles.
This lingerie guide is designed to help you feel confident, supported, and informed when choosing your lingerie. In this lingerie guide, I will explore different styles of lingerie you might choose for everyday wear or for your future boudoir photoshoot or to wear for special moments.
If you are beginning your search for sexy lingerie for your boudoir photoshoot, hopefully this lingerie guide will help walk you through everything you might need to know about lingerie.

When people think of lingerie, the first thing that comes to mind is a simple bra and panty set. This combo is the foundation of any lingerie wardrobe. Bra and panty sets can range from simple T-shirt bras to sultry lace bras and panties. Your bra and panty set could be for every day use or be reserved for special occasions. A bra is designed to be supportive, although most of us women know that unless they are designed correctly, bras are insanely uncomfortable. Panties on the other hand cover your butt. Depending on how a bra and panty set is designed, it creates different silhouettes and accentuates various aspects of your figure, either emphasizing your curves or making your stature look more “square.”
The material your bra and panty sets are made with matters. Commonly used materials include cotton blends, lace, mesh, and microfiber. Cotton is a breathable material and is fairly soft, making it perfect for everyday use. Microfiber tends to feel silky against your skin and is wrinkle-resistant, ideal if you are wearing tightly fitted clothing. Lace and mesh materials are often selected for their visual appeal. Their level of comfortability varies depending on the manufacturer and quality of material used. They add intrigue and depth without adding unnecessary weight.
Personally, when my boudoir clients show up to their photoshoots with 5 or more different options, I feel like a kid in a candy store. I hope this lingerie guide will help you feel confident exploring the world of sexy lingerie. If you are searching for lingerie for your boudoir photoshoot, I would definitely include at least one bra and panty set.
Experimenting with different fits is crucial. I would recommend visiting a lingerie specialty store, such as The Lace Lounge or Jenette Bras on the Westside in Los Angeles, to try on different styles and figure out what suits your body type. The same thing is not going to work for everyone’s bodies. The right band and cup size can drastically change how clothing sits on your body. Make sure you pay attention to the quality of the elastic, stitching and closures. The more comfortable the material is, the less irritated your skin will be at the end of the day. If you are after more shape, then selecting a structured bra will go a long way. There are a million and one designs from minimalistic to ornate, intricate lace styles, so you will have no shortage of options.
Before we dive into more styles of lingerie, I want to take the time in this lingerie guide to break down the different types of bras so you can understand what each one is designed for and how to choose the right fit for your body and lifestyle.
Full coverage bras are pretty self-explanatory. They provide the maximum amount of coverage and support. They use an underwire to help support your boobs and attempt to alleviate weight resting on your shoulders. This style of bra is most popular amongst women with bigger boobs.
Demi is French for half. So, a demi bra is a unique style of bra that covers the bottom half of your boob, supporting and emphasizing your cleavage. This style of bra is perfect for low cut tops and is a fantastic addition to your sexy lingerie collection. Demi bras typically have lace details or scalloped edges, adding to their visual appeal. This style is really popular amongst my boudoir clients, as it accentuates your figure. Demi bras are the perfect lingerie for your boudoir photoshoot.
A balconette or balcony bra creates a subtle lift without adding tons of padding like a push-up bra. These bras create lift from underneath and have an underwire. Balconette bras have wide set straps to accentuate your figure as much as possible. This makes them more suitable for women who have wider shoulders rather than narrow shoulders. Believe it or not, balconette bras were made popular by Marilyn Monroe.

Plunge Bras are great for low-cut clothing. This style of bra is made intentionally with low-cut cups. If you look at the cup shape it resembles more of a V or heart shape rather than the typical shape. Plunge bras do not have the additional padding that is found in push-up bras, but still create irresistible cleavage due to the deep V-cute shape.
This one is super simple, both of the bra cups have a triangle shape that is connected. This style is often wireless, so it gets an A plus on the comfort scale.

A push-up bra has additional padding at the lower half of the cup to assist in giving you the cleavage of your dreams. This padding pushes your boobs up and towards the center. Push-up bras are always going to be a type of demi cup, so that your cleavage can be shown off. There are different levels of push-up bras categorized by how much padding is added

Bralettes are a type of bra that typically does not have an underwire and is less structured. They are often far more comfortable; bralettes are either made out of stretchy fabrics to give a more sporty aesthetic or made out of lace. Because bralettes do not have an underwire, they do not offer the same support or lift as a traditional bra, however they can be equally flattering.
Bralettes can photograph beautifully during boudoir photoshoots. It all depends on the aesthetic you are after; wearing a bralette is going to give your photoshoot a more laidback feeling. I would not wear a bralette in all three of your lingerie looks for your boudoir photoshoot, but it could look beautiful paired with a button-down and pair of jeans.
Corsets and bustiers are structured lingerie pieces that are extremely flattering. If you are heavier set (as in have big boobs) a corset or bustier should provide you with more support. Corsets often lace up and predominantly focus on shaping your midsection. Whereas, a bustier, resembles a longline bra with built-in cops and frames your torso rather than shaping it.
Both corsets and bustiers are often made out of satin, brocade, lace, or sturdy twill fabrics. Typically, these pieces include boning which provides shape and structure. Personally I love corsets and bustiers. I think these make a great addition to any lingerie wardrobe and are a fantastic choice for your future boudoir photoshoot. Both of these sexy lingerie pieces help shape your body into a dramatic, hourglass figure.
Make sure you get a corset that truly fits your body. Corsets and bustiers can be incredibly empowering.
Garter belts and hosieries often go together to create the classic lingerie look. A garter belt goes around your hips or waist and typically attaches to thigh high stockings via adjustable straps. Garter belts are often made of stain, lace or a stretchier material. Often they include intricate lace paneling and add visual appeal.
Garter belts can be paired with various sexy lingerie styles: like a bra and panty sets, corsets, bustiers, bralettes, even one pieces like bodysuits and teddies.
You will probably have to adjust the garter belt to make sure it stays securely on your waist. Hosieries aka thigh high stockings are usually sheer, but range in style from a solid color to thigh high stockings with intricate lace designs. If you like how garter belts fit your body type, you should incorporate one into your sexy lingerie for your boudoir photoshoot. They photograph beautifully.

Teddies and bodysuits are often used interchangeably in the lingerie community. Teddies are known for more intricate detail and lace work, while bodysuits are typically more practical. However, teddies and bodysuits are often interchangeable in the lingerie community. I would personally, go based on style rather than if a specific company is terming the lingerie piece a bodysuit or a teddy. Bodysuits and teddies bridge the gap between sexy lingerie and apparel, depending on the design they can be worn out and about or kept private for your eyes only or for your boudoir photoshoot. They are essentially one-piece clothing garments that cover your entire torso and often connect at your crotch. Bodysuits and teddies are often useful because they visually elongate your torso. This style of lingerie is tightly fitted and outline your figure. Bodysuits are honestly one of my favorite types of lingerie.
Various materials are used to make teddies and bodysuits. It all depends on the style you are after. Bodysuits and teddies can vary in almost every way from the fabric they are made with to whether or not they have an underwire or built-in bra cups for support. Two of the most common materials you can find bodysuits created from stretchy mesh or lace. Both of these materials are highly breathable. Bodysuits are also frequently made with satin or silk blends that feel gentle and soft on your skin. I love all of these. Aesthetically they are miles apart, but each of these bodysuit materials deserves a spot in your closet.
One of the best parts of a bodysuit is how versatile it is. You can pair a bodysuit with jeans or a skirt, or you can wear it to an intimate boudoir photoshoot. In fact, the same bodysuit can be used for both purposes. This makes it a great addition to your wardrobe. This is why fit and style are so important. If you choose a bodysuit that is too tight, you will feel uncomfortable and unable to move freely, but on the flip-side if you select a piece that is too loose, your figure will be obscured and you will feel rectangular. This is why the intended goal of your bodysuit is so important when you start your search. You can find bodysuits with stunning lace details, built in corsets, or ones that are simply tightly fitted fabric. So, stylistically the choice is in your hands.
If you are searching for sexy lingerie for your boudoir photoshoot or thinking about booking a boudoir photoshoot, I highly recommend including a bodysuit as one of your photoshoot looks.

A camisole aka a cami is a sleeveless top with thin straps. Camis are great lingerie pieces to have in your wardrobe as a foundational piece. Often they are made out of silk or satin, which makes them extremely soft and comfortable. Camis can include lace trims, making them easy to dress up and down.
I would not recommend wearing a camisole to your boudoir photoshoot unless you are pairing it with a sexier pair of panties. Unless you are interested in a softer boudoir look. I would also be aware that a camisole might make your figure look more square, so if you are somebody who is concerned with their waist or emphasizing their curves, I would choose different sexy lingerie pieces for your photoshoot.
Slip dresses are simply thin-strapped dresses. Initially, they were made as undergarments, however now they are often worn as standalone garments. Typically they are made from smooth, soft and shiny fabrics like satin and silk. Some slip dresses include padded bra cups while others do not. They range stylistically in simplicity and length.
Robes and cover-ups are outer layers that are often worn over lingerie. Both of these garments can range in style, length, and material – some are sheer while others are silk.
A silk robe feels luxurious on your skin. If you enjoy relaxing in style and comfort, a silk robe is a must have. I do not recommend wearing a robe or cover up as one of your boudoir photoshoot looks. If you want to take a couple shots with your robe on, go for it, but typically robes are not flattering. They don’t draw attention to your beautiful body, but rather minimize your figure.
At the end of the day, lingerie is about far more than fabrics, sizes, or silhouettes—it’s about how you feel in your own skin. This lingerie guide was created to help you navigate your options with confidence, clarity, and intention, so you can choose pieces that truly support your body and your lifestyle. Whether you’re investing in everyday essentials, experimenting with new styles, or selecting something special just for you, or getting ready for your boudoir photoshoot, the right lingerie should feel empowering, comfortable, and authentic to you.
Remember that fit matters, but so does self-expression—there is no single “correct” way to select and wear lingerie. As your body changes, your preferences evolve, and your confidence grows stronger. It is totally normal for your lingerie choices can shift right along with you. Use this lingerie guide as a jumping off point, and start building your lingerie collection. Have fun with it. Choose sexy lingerie pieces that inspire you and make you feel like a badass. Lingerie can be practical, sensual, bold, soft, or all of the above—and you deserve pieces that make you feel supported, beautiful, and powerful every time you put them on.
