10 of the Most Common Misconceptions about Boudoir

Los Angeles Boudoir Photography

As a boudoir photographer, one of the biggest parts of my job is helping women unlearn the harmful narratives they have been taught about their bodies, confidence, sensuality, and self-worth. There are an insane number of misnomers about boudoir; so I wanted to take the time to deconstruct the most common misconceptions about boudoir, so you do not fall into the same trap I have seem countless women get stuck in. So many women are interested in boudoir, but quietly convince themselves they are not “ready,” not confident enough, not attractive enough, or simply “not the kind of person” who does boudoir.

If you stumbled across this blog post and are still wondering what boudoir photography actually is, let me explain. Boudoir photography is an intimate and empowering photography experience designed to help you reconnect with yourself, appreciate your body, and see yourself from a completely different perspective. It is not about perfection. It is about presence. It is about confidence. It is about finally allowing yourself to exist in photographs without tearing yourself apart.

And honestly? I have watched boudoir completely transform the way women see themselves.

I have seen women walk into their session convinced they are awkward, unattractive, “too much,” “not enough,” or somehow disqualified from feeling beautiful. Then I watch them during their image reveal completely break down because they are finally seeing themselves without the constant criticism and insecurity they usually carry.

Women often look at their images and say, “Wow… I cannot believe that is me.”

Some cry. Some are speechless. But almost all of them are overwhelmed by how beautiful and powerful they look. And the truth is, they looked that way the entire time. Boudoir simply gave them permission to finally see it.

If you are wondering “what is boudoir?” read this ELI Boudoir blog post that dives into every question you could have about what boudoir photography is, and then return to this one.

Without further ado, here are 10 of the most common misconceptions about boudoir photography.

What are the most common misconceptions about boudoir? The first is that it is not meant for plus size women. Photograph taken by ELI Boudoir in Los Angeles.

So, Who Am I? What Credentials Do I Have to Dispel Misconceptions About Boudoir?

I am Elili, a Los Angeles boudoir photographer serving clients throughout LA and the Westside. With years of experience photographing women through empowerment-focused boudoir sessions, I have seen firsthand how transformative this experience can be.

But more importantly, I have lived it myself.

I know what it feels like to be deeply insecure. I know what it feels like to feel disconnected from your body and convinced that confidence belongs to other women but somehow not to you. I used to think boudoir was not meant for me either.

Then I did my own boudoir session.

And it completely changed the way I viewed myself.

That experience is the reason ELI Boudoir exists. I realized that seeing yourself from a different perspective can completely shift the narrative you carry about yourself and your insecurities. Once you stop obsessing over what you think other people notice about you and begin truly seeing yourself fully, everything changes.

My mission is to help women experience that same shift.

Misconception #1: Boudoir Sessions Are Awkward

This is probably the most common fear I hear.

And honestly? Your nerves are completely normal. Boudoir is intimidating. You are stepping outside of your comfort zone, often wearing clothing you would not normally wear in front of another person, while being photographed in vulnerable poses. Of course that sounds scary at first.

But the reality is, with the right photographer, your boudoir session should not feel awkward.

A huge part of my job is creating an environment where you feel safe, comfortable, guided, and supported. Most women arrive nervous for the first 15 to 20 minutes. Then something shifts. They stop overthinking. They start laughing. They begin settling into their body instead of fighting against it.

Personally, I demonstrate poses for my clients because I find it much easier and less intimidating than simply giving verbal instructions. I guide you through everything from your fingertips to your facial expressions, so you never feel like you have to “know what to do.”

And honestly, I am a pretty goofy person. I am constantly laughing during sessions and trying to make my clients feel relaxed. Boudoir does not have to feel overly serious or intimidating. It can actually be incredibly freeing and fun.

Misconception #2: You Need to Have a “Perfect Body” to Do Boudoir

There is no such thing as a perfect body.

And yet women spend their entire lives believing there is.

This misconception is one of the most harmful because it convinces women that confidence, sensuality, and self-love are reserved only for certain body types. But boudoir is not about becoming someone else. It is about appreciating yourself exactly as you are right now.

What I have learned through boudoir is that every single person has insecurities. Every person notices flaws within themselves that other people often do not even see. And sometimes when we think others are judging us, they are actually projecting their own insecurities onto us.

We are all taught to constantly chase some impossible version of perfection. Boudoir allows you to step outside of that mindset and finally see yourself differently.

As a photographer, I know how to pose and photograph women in ways that highlight their beauty and make them feel incredible. But more importantly, I want women to understand that their body does not need to change in order to deserve confidence.

Boudoir is for all bodies. Period.

Misconception #3: You HAVE to Wear Lingerie

Nope. Absolutely not.

One of the biggest misconceptions about boudoir photography is that you must wear tiny lace lingerie sets in order for the session to “count.”

The truth is, boudoir is about authenticity. It is about wearing what makes you feel confident, sensual, powerful, soft, or beautiful.

For some women, that is lingerie. For others, it might be an oversized sweater, an unbuttoned white shirt, jeans with no bra, a slip dress, a leather jacket, or even fully implied nude imagery.

There is no right or wrong way to dress for boudoir. Your session should reflect you.

And if you are unsure what to wear, I work closely with my clients beforehand to help them choose outfits that align with their comfort level and vision for the session.

Misconception #4: Boudoir Photos Are Only for Your Partner

Boudoir can absolutely be a gift for a partner. But first and foremost, it should be for you.

One of the most beautiful things about boudoir photography is that it documents a chapter of your life. Women book sessions to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, healing journeys, divorces, weight loss journeys, motherhood, career milestones, or simply because they want to fall further in love with their bodies again.

Even when women initially book their session as a gift for someone else, they almost always leave realizing the experience was truly for them.

Because boudoir changes the way you see yourself.

Misconception #5: You Should Wait Until You Have Your “Dream Body”

I hear this constantly.

“I will book once I lose 20 pounds.” “I just want to tone up first.” “I want to wait until I feel better about myself.”

But here is the truth: there will always be another insecurity if you keep waiting for perfection.

Your body deserves to be celebrated now. Not five pounds from now. Not six months from now. Not once you finally achieve some impossible ideal.

Your body has carried you through your entire life. It deserves love and appreciation in every season.

And as a boudoir photographer, it is my job to help you see the beauty that already exists within you right now.

Misconception #6: You Need to Know How to Pose

I promise you, almost none of my clients know how to pose before their session.

Most women are not professional models. In fact, many people feel incredibly awkward in front of the camera initially. Myself included.

That is why posing guidance is such a huge part of the boudoir experience.

I walk my clients through every pose step by step. I direct hands, posture, facial expressions, movement, and angles so you never feel lost or unsure of yourself.

You do not need experience. You simply need trust.

Misconception #7: Boudoir Is Only for Young Women

Absolutely not.

Boudoir is for every age, every season of life, and every stage of womanhood.

There is something incredibly beautiful about documenting yourself throughout your life and watching yourself evolve over the years. Confidence does not expire with age. Sensuality does not disappear after your twenties. Beauty is not reserved for young women.

Some of the most powerful boudoir sessions I have photographed have been women reclaiming themselves later in life.

Misconception #8: Boudoir Has to Be Done Indoors

Traditionally, boudoir photography was mostly photographed indoors, but modern boudoir can happen almost anywhere.

Personally, outdoor boudoir sessions are some of my favorites because they feel incredibly freeing and adventurous. Beaches, meadows, forests, mountains, deserts, and urban settings can all create stunning boudoir imagery.

One of my favorite sessions ever took place at El Matador Beach.

Outdoor boudoir can feel intimidating at first, but it often creates some of the most magical and empowering images.

Misconception #9: Boudoir Is Inherently Sexual

Boudoir can be sexual, but it does not have to be.

Boudoir is ultimately about self-expression and empowerment.

For some women, that expression looks bold and seductive. For others, it looks soft, romantic, playful, artistic, emotional, gentle, or vulnerable.

There is no one correct way to embody sensuality.

The goal of boudoir is not to become someone else. It is to reflect who you already are.

Misconception #10: Boudoir Is Only for Women

Boudoir has traditionally been marketed toward women, but boudoir photography can absolutely include couples, non-binary individuals, and people of all identities.

Personally, I work primarily with women and couples, but boudoir itself is not limited to one type of person.

At its core, boudoir is about intimacy, confidence, vulnerability, and self-expression, and those experiences are universal.

So, there you have it, the most common misconceptions about boudoir

If there is one thing I hope you take away from this blog post, it is this: boudoir is not reserved for a certain kind of woman.

You do not need to change your body first. You do not need to become more confident first. You do not need to become someone else first.

Your fears are normal. Boudoir is intimidating in the beginning. But almost every woman who walks into my studio nervous eventually reaches a point during the session where she stops questioning herself and starts fully embracing the experience.

And afterward? Most women wish they had done it sooner.

So if you are considering booking a boudoir session, this is your sign to stop talking yourself out of it.

Take the leap. Challenge the way you see yourself. Allow yourself to exist in photographs without tearing yourself apart.

You deserve to see yourself the way the people who love you already do.

And most importantly, remember that choosing the right boudoir photographer matters. You deserve someone who makes you feel safe, comfortable, empowered, and truly seen.
