11 Questions you Need to Ask your Boudoir Photographer

Why Did you Become a Boudoir Photographer?
For most Boudoir photographers, there’s a personal reason that they started doing Boudoir and pursued a career as a Boudoir photographer. I can’t speak for other Boudoir photographers, but personally, I started doing Boudoir to reclaim my own sexuality and become more confident and comfortable in my own skin. When I was younger, I went through sexual assault experiences that left my confidence shattered.
So, in college me and my two best friends at the time decided to be our own Boudoir photographers. We used our phones, but those photographs transformed the way I viewed my body tremendously. So, now it is my mission as a Boudoir photographer to do the same thing for other women. Not everyone has experienced sexual assault, and I hope you haven’t, but if you have this is a phenomenal way to take back the power.
For all my women who haven’t but want to work on their confidence and embrace their sexuality, take the leap and do it. Regardless of if you work with me, Boudoir is a meaningful experience that all women should do at least once in their lifetime. A second part of this question, is making sure your boudoir photographer has experience working with clients like yourself: whether that is being a person of color, someone over 40, someone experiencing a divorce, someone who is recovering from trauma, or anything else.
As a Boudoir Photographer How do you Direct Poses During the Session?
All Boudoir photographers pose their clients, but their methods for assisting you through each pose varies. Some Boudoir photographers might simply provide verbal instructions, while others provide both verbal and visual instructions (as in demonstrating poses).
Personally, I have found the most effective way to direct poses is through both methods. I provide guidance on each and every step, essentially, I am holding your hand. Some poses are really challenging to get into and to hold if you haven’t done them before. So, I demonstrate in addition to providing verbal instructions. Additionally, I like to start with simpler poses and as you get more comfortable, move onto slightly harder poses. Lastly, I make sure to tell each client that if something feels really painful or they don’t feel comfortable with something that we can stop or take a break at any point.
As a Boudoir Photographer Do you Offer Guidance on Wardrobe Selection
I do. I have actually written a blog post about the different types of lingerie outfits that can be worn in Boudoir sessions, which you can read here. But, if my client has an idea of what they want to wear but want to run it by me or get input, I will happily provide it! In fact, I encourage it.
As a Boudoir Photographer What is your Editing & Retouching Process?
All Boudoir photographers have different preferences and it largely depending on their target messaging. Some Boudoir photographers are all about beautification, so make sure to ask. I personally only do light skin retouching, so if you had a butt pimple or a tampon string hanging out, I will happily remove it. But because I am all about embracing who you are on a day-to-day basis, I don’t believe in full skin re-brushing to the extent that you look like a porcelain doll. When you come into the studio for your session reveal and notice any small blemish that you want removed, I will happily make those changes!
What Happens to my Photographs after my Boudoir Session?
Each boudoir photographer will have their own processes: some will provide you with a digital gallery that you can download from the comfort of your home, others will do an in-person reveal, and everyone has their own timeframe!
At ELI Boudoir, after your Boudoir session, I will comb through each photograph selecting all the images that make you look like a hundred bucks. Once I have looked through them, I will schedule a meeting with you where you will get to see your soft proofs. This means the boudoir photographs have base edits, but will go through a final retouching round once you select which collection you want.
Once the beautiful photographs have gone through the final retouching round, you will receive a proof of your printed artwork selection(s) to approve. If your package comes with digitals, you will also receive those via a digital gallery. I personally keep backups your photographs for a year after your session.
How do you Handle Nervousness and Insecurities As a Boudoir Photographer during my Session?
Depending on the Boudoir photographer you can take breaks and they should be hyping you up the whole time. And telling you when you are smashing a pose and making conversation with you. In my sessions, I let my clients take as many breaks within the allotted time as they deem necessary. So, if they need a second between each pose to reset that is absolutely fine with me. And I have a questionnaire that gets sent out to my client’s prior to the session that covers your favorite and least favorite parts of your body. This lets me plan poses that accentuate your favorite parts and conceal your least favorite!
How do you my Ensure Privacy and Confidentiality?
This question relates to the next question, but this is all about what photographs your Boudoir photographer wants to include on their website and how much input you have. Personally, I ensure my clients have the last say and that there are no photographs on my website that reveal my client’s identity if they are not comfortable it.
Can I see your Portfolio?
If you talk to any Boudoir photographer who tells you that you cannot see their portfolio, you should not hire them. I will say, the portfolio on most Boudoir photographers’ website is often not representative of their work. Because Boudoir is such an intimate experience, a good Boudoir photographer will receive client approval for the specific photos they want on their website. Personally, I create a separate folder with images I would love to use and then only post the ones my clients approve! I would also ensure that this is detailed in their contract.

Can I Bring Props to my Boudoir Session?
Absolutely. As a Boudoir photographer I like knowing which prompts you want to incorporate before you get to the studio. This way I can brainstorm more cool ideas! I love including props and items that hold significance to you. These props will not be in each photograph but there will be a bunch for you to choose from!
What Sets you Apart from Other Boudoir Photographers?
To me this is really a question about the Boudoir photographer’s character. Are they someone you can relate to? Or naturally feel comfortable around. So, take the time to ask them some questions and feel out whether they are someone you would feel more nervous getting into lingerie around. A lot of what sets a boudoir photographer apart is their process and how much care and experience they have. I personally limit my schedule, so that I can deliver the highest quality experience to each and every client.
Can I Bring a Friend/Companion to my Boudoir Session?
Absolutely. Different Boudoir photographers have various rules around who is allowed to come to your Boudoir session. Personally, I only let women come into my sessions, so if my client wants to bring a friend with them, they absolutely can. We all need as many hype women as we can get. Other Boudoir photographers don’t like disruptions in their studio while their creative juices are flowing. I do think that despite what you would assume, typically having a friend at the studio with you while we are shooting will make you feel more self-conscious, not less.
